Are you planning to use ClassTools this summer?

Apex Learning is scheduled to release new and updated content in ClassTools on July 1, 2008. Here are some things that you should know about these updates:

In order to access the new content, teachers will need to enroll students in newly created classrooms on or after July 1, 2008.

Actively-used classrooms created prior to July 1, 2008 will remain available after July 1, but will not reflect any updates in content and features.

In order to encourage the use of the updated material, all ClassTools classrooms and enrollments created prior to July 1, 2008 will be expired on August 1, 2008.

Student and teacher accounts, and student progress reports, will remain intact and available after the August 1, 2008 expiration date.

New trainings for ClassTools users

The DLC now requires completion of a two-part training in order to create a new ClassTools account. The first 30-45 minute training provides an overview of the content and use of the resource; the second 90-120 minute training guides users through best practices. Existing account holders are encouraged to participate but are not required to do so. Go to: http://www.learningcommons.org/educators/tr/classtools/accounts.php

Two high school librarians have found creative ways to inspire their students to become better fact-finders. Ballard High’s Debbie Arthur and Shorewood High’s Brenda Gilman talk about the importance of motivating students now so that they become lifelong seekers of knowledge.
Conference Debriefs

We’re happy to report that 55 educators attended our second annual Innovative Practices for Student Achievement Conference in November. Here’s what a couple of the participants had to say:

“My goal for this conference was to come away with resources and knowledge to come back to my school and train individual teachers and students on how to use the resources. I not only learned more about the uses for these resources but also where to find training resources for the people I’ll be working with.”

“I imagine myriad ways in which I will be able to use the various DLC resources I was exposed to at this conference. My approach will be, one situation at a time, to identify a need, choose the appropriate DLC tool, and achieve implementation through successful communication. I hope to accomplish these goals on an ongoing basis, beginning today.”

In other conference news, the second cohort of educators started Teacher2Teacher in October. They attended a three-day retreat and will meet again twice more this school year. Learn more about Teacher2Teacher below; and email Maile at mhadley@learningcommons.org if you’d be interested in attending in the future:
http://www.learningcommons.org/t2t/

January 2007

Happy new year from all of us at the DLC!

Search the DLC 4X Faster

We've made some improvements to the DLC search box (found in the right-hand corner of every web page). It now scours all four library databases at once, serving up results even faster than before. And once you do an initial search, you can now drill down by level: elementary, middle, or high.

The DLC search is a great way for students to start the research process. Then they can dig deeper into the databases with the most relevant resources. The DLC search engine is also a good way to wean students off Google into more relevant (and safe) searching.

Powerful Teaching and Learning with the DLC Library

Find library resources to support Powerful Teaching and Learning in the classroom:
http://www.learningcommons.org/about/highlights/2007/01/poweful_teaching.php

Mid-Month School Support

We'll be sending out usage reports mid January so that you can see which DLC resources your school is using the most. DLC staff will follow up with you to review the stats and offer assistance with second-semester needs and goals.

Free Resources for the College Bound

Even if your school doesn't subscribe to WOIS or Bridges, students can still access tools to help with college planning. The DLC links to free ACT and SAT test-prep courses (Number2) and a financial aid resource (FinAid). Point students to the DLC's College & Career Planning section to get started:
http://www.learningcommons.org/students/planning/

Students can also tap into our Student Mentors' expertise, since they've already been through the college and career planning process themselves. For more on mentors, click below:

Save on WASL Math Courses

Just a reminder about the DLC's WASL online course sale that is currently underway. To better help you prepare students to pass the WASL, the DLC has lowered the price of WASL Math Prep courses to $100 per single term registration. (You'll save up to $220 per registration!)
