DLC Email Accounts

The DLC provides email accounts for all students taking an online course. Our email provider, Gaggle.net, is an email and chat service popular with schools and educational programs as it provides a safe and closed online communication environment that is closely monitored by the DLC for appropriateness of use. With the exception of students taking courses from the Internet Academy, which provides email addresses, students should use their DLC email accounts for communication with their course instructors and providers, outside of their online courses.

Students' DLC email accounts are activated and accessible within 24 hours of registering a student for his/her course. "Welcome" emails from the course providers are sent to these email accounts and provide the student with information about logging in and getting started on their course. Welcome messages from the course providers should be received within 24 hours of the course start date.

NOTE: Two providers will not email your student with welcome messages and login information: Virtual High School (VHS) and University of Washington Extension (UWE). To learn more about VHS logins, refer to the VHS registration section of this handbook.

UWE will mail letters to the Teacher/Mentor's attention at the school address. Teacher/Mentors *must* share this letter with the student in order for the student to access his/her course. This letter provides the student's private access code (PAC) and instructions for setting up a UW NetID, a personal network identification on the University of Washington computer systems. Once the student's UW NetID is established, he or she may access the online courses by logging in to www.myuw.washington.edu and clicking on the Student tab. The student's courses will be listed at the top of the Student page under Class Schedule.

Finding and distributing email account information

Once a student has been registered for an online course, the Registrar and/or Teacher/Mentor must give the student DLC email account information and can do so by following these steps:

  1. From the Registration homepage, click on a term link under "Existing Registrations."
  2. Locate the student's name in the list of registrations.
  3. Collect student's DLC email account and Gaggle Initial Password information, or print the page and give it to your student.

Finding DLC E-mail

Student email information is also found within the DLC registration system via the "View School Roster" and "Teacher/Mentor: View my students" links.

Logging in to the DLC email account

With login information in hand, the student should then log in via the DLC Email page using his/her entire DLC email address and password, for example:

  • User Name: joe.smith@email.learningcommons.org
  • Password: color123

Course Support team members can review additional information about the student's initial password and who to contact for help with the email account by clicking on the Email (Help) link in the student registration list.
