Creating a Bibliography

intro | plagiarism | paraphrase | summarize | quote | cite | notes | sources | bibliography

A bibliography is an important part of your research paper. It shows your readers (and your teacher!) where your research comes from. Basically, a bibliography lists all your sources in alphabetical order. Sometimes your list of sources is titled "References," "Works Cited," or "Endnotes" instead of "Bibliography." (Or your teacher may ask you to use footnotes instead of a bibliography.)

Bibliography Dos and Don'ts

Dos

  • Make sure you know which format to use for your bibliography (e.g., MLA or APA). If you don't know, ask your teacher.
  • Record the info for all your citations as you research and write.
  • Stay organized so that you know the source for each quote, paraphrase, and summary in your paper.
  • Write your bibliography slowly and carefully to make sure you follow the format (e.g., MLA or APA).
  • Proofread your bibliography. Spelling and punctuation count.

Dont's

  • Don't wait until you finish writing your paper to gather all the info for your bibliography.
  • Don't rush the writing of your bibliography.
  • Don't mix formats. Stick to the one your teacher asks you to use (e.g., MLA or APA).
