Overview of the Day

Orientation PowerPoint

Introduction

Let's start by looking at an overview of Teacher2Teacher: A Collaboration Project. We are going to provide a brief overview of the goals, activities, and schedule. Let's first talk about the goals.

In recent years, school-based professional development has become more and more common. Unfortunately, it is not always successful. According to a recent article written by Alan Richard (2003), school-based professional development efforts that fail do so for three main reasons:

  • Lack of experience.
  • Poor communication skills.
  • Limited preparation.

Teacher2Teacher is designed to help address each of these areas.

Program Goals

The goals of Teacher2Teacher are to train school-based teacher leaders to help other teachers:

  • Goal 1: Plan and implement instructional activities that integrate DLC resources into their curriculum.
  • Goal 2: Collaborate with colleagues to integrate DLC resources into their lesson activities.
  • Goal 3: Use coaching and collaboration skills to promote discussion about instruction.

During Day 1, you will:

  • Begin to understand the goals and objectives of the program.
  • Review background research in professional development and how it aligns with the principles of peer coaching.
  • Practice communication and collaboration skills.
  • Establish a set of group norms.
  • Explore powerful DLC resources and start your own personal resource collection, which can be used with colleagues.
  • Explore the concept of Powerful Teaching and its impact on effective learning activities.
